VALKYRIE*

Valkyrie is a sweet 9-10 yr old girl looking for a quiet home where she won't have to compete with other pets.  She is not good with young children or with smaller dogs.  Val is a larger girl who is a bit overweight right now.  She loves her toys and will protect them from other critters.  She walks well on a leash, adores being petted, and is hoping to find an owner who will be happy to have her as a quiet companion.  Her best home is with adults only.  If you have a home where Val can relax and adore you, please click here to fill out an adoption application.  She is waiting for you.

COURTESY POST for NEMA:

SHADOW-FAX

ShadowFax is a 7 yr old neutered male who was grossly overweight when he came into the NEMA rescue.  He is now at a healthy weight and ready to find his forever home.  Because of his former problem with weight, he needs to be fed two meals a day and kept to a healthy diet.  He is good with other dogs and with children.  Cats are unknown.  He is available through the Norwegian Elkhound Minutemen Association.  Click here to visit their website and download the adoption agreement or email Nancee for more information.

COKEY

Cokey is a great mature gentleman who is a bit larger than your average elkhound. At 65 lbs, he is not overweight!   Cokey was found in southern IL and has been looking for a special person to be his.   His behavior indicates that he is used to being an indoor dog and also that he is probably housebroken.   Cokey had a large cyst removed from his right shoulder so there is a patch of hair which is growing in from where it was shaved.   He loves being in contact with a human but isn't so thrilled by other dogs.   He ignores them if they aren't too close but will act in a  protective/aggressive way if they are within a few feet.   He will take correction well is very responsive to loving.   He wants nothing more than to be with someone and care for them.   He doesn't jump on you but will lean against you a lot.

Cokey is probably about 7 yrs old although his age is somewhat of a mystery.  His teeth were in good shape except for the front teeth being worn down.   From the behavior he showed in a car, he might even have been used to riding shotgun in a truck.  When he was in the car and unaware that we were approaching the passenger side, he sounded fierce.   At the sound of a voice he knew, you could hear his tail thumping the side of his crate.   He will get carsick if confined too long in a crate in the back of a car - human contact is his comforting factor.   He will try to sit in front.   During a long cross country drive, he was instantly drawn to the bed in the hotel room so has obviously been someone's close companion.   He is a big love.   He needs to be happy and comfortable to hold his tail over his back.   Cokey is the name he got at the shelter and he really doesn't respond to that.   He responds to smiles and happy voices.  If you would love to have a friendly older boy to watch over you, please click here to fill out an application to adopt him and remember to mention his name.   He's in northern NJ and waiting for his special someone.   Maybe that is You!

LAKOTA

Lakota is a sweet 2 year old girl who was adopted at a shelter as an elkhound/Akita mix.   Bigger than your normal elkhound, she appears to take after her Akita side and may be all Akita.  She is spayed and up to date on shots.  She was surrendered after her owner’s sudden financial misfortune and would love to be part of a home again.  Lakota needs company during the day or will suffer from anxiety and will chew things.  She would do best in an active home where she has a companion and access to a fenced yard or a person who could go on regular hikes with her.  She is ok with other dogs but wants to play rough.  She is not good with cats or small animals but she’s great with elkhounds!  She loves her toys and is all about playing.  Are you the right home for this sweet young girl?  Please click here to fill out an adoption application.  She is in northern New Jersey.   Don't forget to mention her name!  She'll be sooo Happy!

SMOKIE* - blind dog

Smokie is a sweet boy, maybe 6-7 yrs old, who needs to go into just the right home environment.  Blind in one eye, he may see shadows in the other.  His sight impairment appears to have been developing for a while.  For that reason, he needs a patient family willing to learn or accustom to dealing with this handicap because he will need to get adjusted to a new environment.  A calm and gentle canine companion might be good for him as well.  If you are looking for a special dog who needs you, please click here to fill out the adoption application and mention his name.

COURTESY POST for Freeport Animal Shelter:

SAMANTHA

Sammy is a 6 yr old spayed female mix who seems to have some shepherd, buhund, chow, or Akita in her.  She is up to date on vaccines and heartworm prevention and has been looking for a home where she can be the one and only love of your life (at least as far as non-humans go).  She has lived most of her life at the shelter and desperately wants someone to love.  She is a bit shy at first meeting but warms up once she knows she can trust you.   She loves going for walks with the volunteers and is very calm on the leash.   In the summer, when it's very hot, she likes to have the hose run gently on her chest, but doesn't like to "get sprayed at".   She also enjoys her plastic pool so she can step in and out of it to cool off.   She has never had basic training and appreciates anyone who spends time with her.  Sammy hasn't interacted with many other dogs and would probably be best as the one and only love of your life.  She is at the Freeport Animal Shelter in Freeport, NY.   Please contact them at 516-378-4340 or email Dori at minnie514@hotmail.com for more information.   Sammy has been dreaming of her furever home for a long time.   Maybe that is you!
